The Jenner Centre – DD9 Connections Issue No 28

,

We have a number of new and different things going on at The Jenner Centre.  It’s interesting that the Jenner Centre is seen more and more as an ideal location for organisations to hold meetings and offer services.  You’ll find more information throughout this issue but here’s a taster.

Town House/Brechin Museum

The Town House/Brechin Museum  having been holding their evening meetings at The Jenner Centre.  Having agreed at an earlier meeting that efforts be made to save the Museum for Brechin, they have formed a committee of eight or so.  They are now considering their constitution and preparing to submit their application to become a registered charity with the Office of Scottish Charity Regulator, OSCR.  The Town House on the corner of the High Street and Church Street was the site of the Tollbooth which was built in the 15th Century.  Much more recently – in the past 50 years – the current building has been home to Willie Low’s grocery, a Chinese restaurant and Fraser’s Fashions, and most recently of course, the Brechin Museum which closed a couple of years ago.

Pylons

Angus Council approached us to see if we could accommodate information from SSEN regarding the proposal to erect pylons through our area carrying electricity for Kintore to Tealing. There’s a huge amount of information but folk are being invited to peruse/examine the information over the  next month whenever The Jenner Centre is open.  There is also a stick available at The Jenner Centre which you can borrow to access the various resources at your own convenience.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Our Macmillan Coffee morning will be held on Saturday 18th October from 10am to 12 noon with the support of the Cancer Support Group.  Come and enjoy tea and coffee with pancakes and home baking and support a very good cause.  We would be very grateful for raffle prizes to help raise funds.

Citizens Advice

Try, try, try again and we do get there!  When we first set up The Jenner Centre in St. David Street we spoke to a representative of Citizens Advice (CAB) about using our premises (with a view to moving with us to the Infirmary site!).  Some time later two of us went to Arbroath to talk to the people at CAB and again had hopes of bringing them to Brechin.  Now at last we are about to welcome Citizens Advice to The Jenner Centre to support the folk of our community.  We never give up!!

Brechin Community Diary

Do you remember when there used to be a diary at the Library where groups couple enter any event they were organising?  They could check to avoid clashing events and dates.  Now so much is on social media you would think there wouldn’t be a problem, however that doesn’t seem to be the case.  The diary has now been resurrected and is held in The Jenner Centre.  It’s also another way of publicising your events.  Any notified online will be added to the diary to ensure this holds the most complete list of events.  If it’s not used it will fall by the wayside.

Age Scotland publications

I have ordered a number of booklets from Age Scotland including “Avoiding Scams” and “Power of Attorney” which we can use as a resource on various concerns you might have.  Feel free to come and have a look.

Blood Pressure Monitors Calibration

Thirty blood pressure monitors were calibrated at the session held at the end of September.  This is an invaluable service since it’s important for people to know that their BP machines are accurate.  Two people also had their monitors replaced.  It is expected that the calibration team will return on a regular basis.  We’ll let you know the next dates.

Update on Light Bulbs and Batteries

Angus Small Repairs tell us that as they work to recruit more volunteers, they are unable at present to offer their “Get Set for Winter” which involved hanging winter curtains and bringing in summer furniture.  However to ensure your home is well lit and safe they will still provide free light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries.

A big thank you to all those who donated fruit for jam making and, equally important, the jars.  The jam and jelly stocks have been replenished using the raspberries, apples, damsons, gooseberries and plums.

All the usual services continue and are very busy.  Someone said the other day that she felt we offered a good service here.  We hope you think so too.
