The Jenner Centre – DD9 Connections Issue No 20

,

One concern we’ve had since we moved to Clerk Street has been the change of level through to the room at the back and to the toilets. It’s only one step up or down but that can still be a safety issue for those with minor mobility or balance issues. We’ve taken advice and will be placing grab handles where there is a step to be negotiated. The raised threshold at the front door will also benefit from a grab handle and we will no longer have to call out “mind the step” as folk come and go. We have a moveable ramp which can be placed to make the entrance easier for wheelchair users.

We’ve been busy at the Jenner Centre as we develop some of the activities reported on last time. Elsewhere in this Issue you’ll see a piece which includes the “happy to chat” message on a  Cornish town’s new benches. The plaques on their benches have a QR code directing people to a website that signposts to additional services for all ages. “Happy to chat” sums up much of what happens in the Jenner Centre and we aim to help people find the information and support that they need without the need for a QR code.

We held a very successful Macmillan coffee morning at the end of October which was well supported. A big thank you to all who donated raffle prizes, who came and gave generously, and to those who donated although unable to visit on the day. You raised £317.50 for the charity so thank you again.

The Cancer Support Group held its first meeting in October and will continue on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2pm. A fuller report is elsewhere in this Issue but this first session was much appreciated by those who came. It is run in conjunction with Improving the Cancer Journey, ICJ, part of the Macmillan Cancer Support network.

The Chit Chat with Coffee (and tea) mornings are held on Mondays from 10am with word of mouth encouraging more folk each week. Whether it’s an opportunity to meet acquaintances old and new, or pass the time before or after your Footcare appointment there’s always plenty of chat. We’re grateful to several new volunteers who have joined us to run this, who have taken their Food Hygiene training and who are natural chatters and listeners! (We always need more volunteers so do come and join us)

There is more chat when the friendly and supportive Arts and Crafts Group meet. They come with their bags of craft work but we also have needles, patterns and yarn for those who want to try something new.

There are other organisations who book space with us and arrange appointments for their own clients, while there are more plans in the pipeline to offer further support for a variety of needs. If your organisation needs space to see clients or just need a desk for a few hours, please get in touch to see what we can offer.
